With further reference to your letter of the

2nd December (No. 53712/5/38) regarding a petition

addressed to the Governor of Hong Kong on behalf of

one(c:

persons claiming to be relatives of a Chinese seaman

named Cheung Kwai Wan (or Ah Wing or Chong Kae Wing)

who lost his life following the sinking of the

last,) I

s.s. "Thorpeness" on the 21st June last, I am

directed by the Board of Trade to transmit herewith,

for the information of Mr. Secretary MacDonald, a copy

of a letter dated 20th January with copy enclosure,

received from the Westcliff Shipping Company Limited,

who desire to bring the matter of compensation to an

early conclusion, without awaiting the additional

information asked for in the Board's letter to you of

16th January.
